OVERVIEW

Kerr’s was founded in 1895 by brothers Edward and Albert Kerr. They emigrated from Scotland and then they opened a candy shop in St. Thomas, Ontario. Kerr’s is an industry leader in Canadian confectionery as the candy is known for its quality and rich heritage.

CHALLENGE

To redesign the three skews of Kerr’s mint candy. The font size was not cohesive throughout the skews of flavours. The bag was not resealable and warped around a lot so it wasn’t able to sit upright. Text can be hard to read because of the very reflective packaging. The overall design seemed to be overcrowded. Also, the bag was not resealable for a product that wan't meant to be consume in one sitting. The current overall design didn’t reflect the brand’s positioning of having the highest quality confectionery.

SOLUTION

The redesigned packages would be a resealable bag design to keep the mints fresh when opened. The design will have the flexibility to be hanged as well as stand in shelving in a retail environment. This packaging provides more structure and durability for the candy as the candy won’t be as easily crushed compared to the thin plastic packaging before. We got rid of the photographic images of the mints on the previous packaging. Instead, we did illustrations of the different types of leafs correlating to the flavour of the mints and put it on the top left side of the cutout for a visual distinction between the flavours.  We wanted a more overall sophisticated look to show the candy was higher quality. We want the new design to not scare away current consumers by keeping the colour coding similar but we also want to attract newer consumers with the sleeker design.
